The final March Musical Spotlight performers are the exceptionally talented husband and wife team — Chet Atkins-style guitarist Jim Nichols and the very silky song stylist Morning Nichols. The Nashville and Bay Area celebrated couple, known for their pull-out-all-the-stops gigs at our local concert hall, plan to do a little bit of Americana, a little bit of jazz, and are particularly excited about strutting out a piece with violinist Stern. Chock full of infectious melodies, “The Pirates of Penzance” is the story of Frederic, who as a young lad was mistakenly indentured to pirates, as opposed to “pilots,” because his hard-of-hearing nursemaid Ruth did not hear the request properly. At play start, the pirate apprentice has just turned 21 and The Pirate King and his pirate comrades have released Frederic from his servitude. Frederic, a gentleman and an honorable man who has never cared for being a pirate, realizes all at once that he must leave the pirates, including the only woman he has ever seen — Ruth, now a pirate’s maid — and hunt the buccaneers down because that is the honorable thing to do. He tells the pirates this before he leaves because that is also the honorable thing to do. Then, Gilbert and Sullivan and the entire cast, crew and orchestra of Ms. Lodick’s musical — which includes a fair maiden, who falls for Frederic as he for her, the eight sisters of the fair maiden, the kind-hearted but sturdily “arrrr-ing” pirates, a cowardly and comical police force, and the very model of a modern major-general (also the maidens’ dad) — take their audience on such a merry ride, that it is impossible to leave this Pacifica production without wanting to sing or dance and/or be (safely) part of a pirate’s duel.

Mike Lodick is loaded with charm as Samuel, The Pirate King’s Lieutenant, and he owns an exquisite vocal. John Szabo as Sergeant H. Schultz electrifies with his bass, plus he and his fellow police officers are the most wonderfully goofy team of funnymen since Laurel met Hardy. Praise to all the women who play the Stanley Sisters — they do have the voices of angels — with standout performances by dazzling soprano Lisa Claybaugh (Edith Stanley), and the sublimely talented soprano Rachel Lock (Kate Stanley). The chemistry of the cast glows, and when they all sing together, it’s the kind of choral experience that makes your heart sigh. As to the choreography — wow.
