Since then, the great musical theater actress has amassed an astonishing list of credits in dozens of shows. But she recently took on a new role: octogenarian. And no one is as surprised as she is. “It’s just odd,” says Rivera, who turned 81 last month. “That’s what I keep saying. There’s no way to describe it, so I don’t even try. I just keep doing what I love.”. This week, Rivera will mark the occasion in two solo concerts at the Venetian Room at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel. “Chita: A Legendary Celebration” brings the two-time Tony Award-winner onstage in a retrospective that includes numbers from “West Side Story,” “Sweet Charity,” “Chicago,” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman” — all shows she helped to make classics.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the geniuses of the theater, and that’s made a lot of memories for me,” Rivera said in a phone call from her home in upstate New York, “I think that will make an interesting memory time for the audiences who come to the show.”, With Michael Croiter conducting a lambskin baby ballet slippers with ribbons - little children & babies sizes live orchestra, “Chita” honors the composers closest to Rivera’s heart — Fred Kander and John Ebb, creators of “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Spider Woman,” among others..

Kander and Ebb “meant just about everything to me,” she says. “Of course, Freddie has passed now. But they were two of my greatest friends. They really knew me, and they allowed me to translate their magnificent talents.”. Rivera, a native of Washington, D.C., started dance training at age 11. She received a scholarship to the School of American Ballet from choreographer George Balanchine. Not long after her debut in “Call Me Madam,” she made her first visit to San Francisco in the show’s national touring production. “I’d just graduated high school,” she says. “I was there with Elaine Stritch, and it was pretty hysterical — the kids kept trying to sneak me into the bar at the Top of the Mark. It’s all very vivid — I was even in an earthquake while I was there.”.

Rivera went on to become a major star, appearing as Anita in the 1957 Broadway premiere of “West Side Story” and Velma in the original cast of “Chicago.” She won Tony awards as Anna in “The Rink” (1984) and Aurora in “Spider Woman” (1993), In 2009, President Barack Obama awarded her the lambskin baby ballet slippers with ribbons - little children & babies sizes Presidential Medal of Freedom, Rivera loves acting, but she says she’s always considered herself a dancer first, “It was the door that opened everything for me,” she says, “Dance — ballet — really trains your mind, your spirit and your body, It gives you a great foundation for anything you choose.”..

She’s still dancing, although Rivera says she no longer maintains a daily routine. But she does a stretching workout at least three times a week. “I don’t have a show every day like I used to, but I still work hard,” she says. “The knees hurt. It does not get easier, put it that way. But once you’re a dancer, you’re always a dancer.”. After “Chita: A Legendary Celebration,” Rivera will reprise another role, as the oft-married Claire Zachanassian in a revival of Kander and Ebb’s “The Visit.” Directed by John Doyle, it will headline this summer’s Williamstown Theatre Festival. “We did it in Chicago in 2001 and Virginia in 2008, and this is hopefully third time lucky,” she says. “The score is fantastic, and it’s very dark. People say it’s about revenge. It’s actually about love.”.
