There were a number of factors that led to this transfwormation, but much of it can be attributed to her involvement with the school’s Future Business Leaders of America club, Surrounded by business-minded young people, Angela saw firsthand the kind of skills required to make it in the real world, By just observing some of the upperclassmen, she said, she was able to develop her public speaking and presentation skills, things she lacked early on, “I joined freshman year because all my friends did, necklace "ballet shoes" I didn’t find public speaking very appealing, but ended up being given so many opportunities,” Angela said, “I joined a team of upper and underclassmen, and in public speaking, they were seasoned and it brought me out of my shell and made me more comfortable.”..
Andrea Badger, the business department chair and former FBLA adviser, remembers Angela as a freshman. She saw from the beginning how the 17-year-old grew on campus. “She was just a very quiet, shy freshman. She did her work and tried hard and asked questions, but she was nervous to come up to class and present. She wasn’t outgoing and wouldn’t push herself,” Badger said. “Sophomore year, I had seen how she was part of FBLA. She was just kind of a member freshman year, and then she got more active in more projects. FBLA brought her out of her shell.”.
Angela also credits world history teacher Esther Lee for encouraging her to talk during class, saying, “If you’re afraid of the sound of your own voice, it’s kind of embarrassing.”, And that’s when she had her aha moment, Although intimidating, whatever she did at Lynbrook was relatively safe, Angela said, She had chances to take risks without much at stake, and any challenge she faced in high school was laughable compared to what she would face in the real world, “High school is a place where you find yourself and what you like to do, If I just joined what I liked to do–math and science–then it would be a shame and a waste, I would be wasting all the other opportunities in front of me,” said Angela, who necklace "ballet shoes" attended Faria Elementary and Miller Middle schools..
And with that mindset, Angela catapulted her way through high school. She worked with struggling students as a peer tutor in the Engaged program and found ways to engage them in learning. Sometimes challenging, the task was made easier by relating to the students and finding ways to make it fun, Angela said, adding that her persistence comes from family teachings of Confucius, of whom she is a 75th descendant. With the Engaged program, Angela found herself not only tutoring her peers but mentoring them through personal issues as well. In light of the Isla Vista killings, in which a Lynbrook alum was fatally stabbed, she said students should be supporting one another and that there is no place for bullying.
Angela recalled the story of a Lynbrook student she tutored, who had moved to the Bay Area from Arizona and had a hard time adjusting, “At first she felt the necklace "ballet shoes" Lynbrook environment was too much, too competitive, She was very bitter about being tutored,” Angela said, “I got her to see the positive things at Lynbrook, and now she’s adjusting very well, The combination of personal experience and wanting to help others shaped who I am right now.”, While she invested and cared in her peers’ success, Angela also had her successes during her time at Lynbrook..
She was active in the school’s dance team and started a dance club at the school. She carried an unweighted 4.0 grade point average and was the public relations officer for WiSTEM (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). And she was also selected to represent Lynbrook High at the Fremont Union High School District office, which each year profiles a boy and a girl from each of its high schools who best represent their respective schools. But perhaps the biggest achievement came when Angela was selected a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, much to her surprise.
“I always thought Intel was something for other people, not me, so when I did get the necklace "ballet shoes" phone call, I was very shocked,” she said, In the fall, Angela will be off to Stanford University to study computer science and biology, She wants to stay involved with dance, tutoring and engineering, working with programs such as CompassPoint and Engineers Without Borders, Mainly, though, Angela says she wants to keep learning and challenging herself every day, “I want to learn for rest of my life, I don’t want to stop after my academic career.”..
