Such was certainly the case this past week at Town Hall Theatre’s “Candida,” Center Rep’s “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and Berkeley Rep’s “The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.”. Martin Flynn designed Town Hall’s comfortable sitting room, highlighted by a cozy fireplace, for George Bernard Shaw’s “Candida” to unfold. The satirical take on Victorian morals and politics tells of a young poet’s amorous attentions to a popular reverend’s beautiful wife, Candida. Molly Aaronson-Gelb directs, with Maggie Mason imbuing Candida with equal parts charm and intelligence. Derek Fischer nicely portrays the pomposity of the Rev. James Morell, although his vocal quality seems a bit too affected at times. The athletically nimble Luke Myers does a fine job as the lovesick Eugene, with Dave Garrett, Rebecca Pingree and Alan Coyne added nice touches of humor in supporting roles.
