Frank Gasparovic was a star football and basketball player at Slidell High School outside New Orleans, and Kim was on the dance team that performed at halftimes. They liked each other, but were always going out with other people, so nothing romantic ever happened. After their 1977 graduation, they went their separate ways. Frank went to college in Mississippi on a basketball scholarship, studied business and wound up in the Bay Area. Kim stayed in Louisiana, became a kindergarten teacher and settled in Slidell. Both married other people and started families.

On their first night on the island, Frank rushed her out to the beach at sunset. They found a spot under a tree near some lava rocks. Frank knelt in the sand, took Kim’s hand and said, “I want to ask for your hand in marriage. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” After Kim said, “yes,” Frank added, “The wedding is on the beach tomorrow night.”.
